Scenarios often start you at an entirely different location, so you have to wait for a train, catch it to the right station, then walk up and across the footbridge to your train, get in, start it up, and then wait for the scheduled departure, all in real time. Once you’ve got the hang of starting up, accelerating and braking in the right place, there’s a far greater challenge to overcome: boredom. Move the throttle to position 1, and voila, you’re off and trundling very slowly forwards. Set the reverser to neutral, reset the AWS alarm, start the engine, set headlights to day, move the reverser to the forward position, wait for the brakes to charge and once they have, set them to ‘running’. Walk to the train, climb into the cab, sit down, and turn the master key.
The meat of the game though is driving, and to give you an impression of the pulse-racing thrills that await, here’s what you need to do to start up a BR Class 43 high speed train before setting off for the heady delights of Ealing Broadway. There’s also service mode that lets you hop on and off scheduled trains like a passenger, driving any you fancy or simply riding around looking out of the window. These include a rapid transit trip along a German S-Bahn route, a Great Western Express journey from Paddington to Reading, and a freight train service along New York’s East corridor to Newark. As well as driving random trains, Train Sim World also offers up scenarios that give you a specific problem to overcome, such as a cancelled train or an absent driver.
